Lessons from Iselle and Julio
We are thankful that most of Hawaii escaped major damage from back to back hurricanes last month. The impact could have been much worse and we are thankful the state, city, and businesses were proactive and maintained safety and took precautions to minimize damage. Hawaii Tech Support helped clients prepare for the hurricanes by working with clients directly to preserve their servers and networks. We initiated server shutdowns that would protect servers in the event of power outages and surges and issued a hurricane server and network preparedness checklist to all of our clients that allowed them to take the steps necessary to protect their computers, server and data.
Providing clients access to our helpdesk and maintaining operations were very important to us even as we shut down our office as many other government agencies and business had. Through Hurricane Iselle we learned to appreciate cloud solutions even more and validated our remote solutions as our technicians were available by phone, email and our NOC (Network Operation Center) was fully functional, never missing a beat. In fact, after assessing the weather, one of our technicians went to Waimanalo, where it was raining cats and dogs, to help a client with a server issue. The Hurricane Season officially ends in November, so make sure you have a plan in place including a robust off-site data backup plan and support when you need it.
